Salacia binds to intestinal enzyme alpha-glucosidases that break down carbohydrates into glucose in the body. Salacia contains inhibitors of sugar digestion and absorption. When Salacia Oblanga is present in the digestive tract, the intestinal digestive enzymes bond to chemical components of Salacia instead of the sugar or carbohydrates. The result is less glucose production. Salacia oblonga inhibits the breakdown of oligosaccharides (disaccharide and trisaccharides) such as sucrose, maltose etc. into monosaccharides and inhibits the absorption of monosaccharides such as glucose, mannose etc. in the body. Salacia contains two potent a-Glucosidase inhibitors: Salicinol and Kotalanol together with several known phenolic compounds, new sesquiterpenes (salasols A & B) and triterpenes (kotalagenin 16-acetate, salasones A-E, salaquinones A & B). The extracts unique, multipronged approach to lowering postprandial glycemia and insulinemia offers greater flexibility in diet for the patient. Salacia oblonga extract has a proven history of use in India and Japan where it is taken as a tea or a supplement with meals.
